The City of Troy is a prosperous city in Oakland County, Michigan. Troy MI is currently the 2nd largest city in Oakland County just behind Farmington Hills MI and the 12th largest city in the State of Michigan. Troy has become a business and shopping destination in the Metro Detroit area, with numerous office headquarters and the upscale Somerset Collection mall being main attractions for the City of Troy MI. The City of Troy was recently ranked the 5th safest city in the nation, as well as the safest city in Michigan. In 2008, Troy was ranked 22nd on a list of "Best Places to Live" in the United States by CNN Money, using criteria including housing, quality of education, economic strength, and recreational opportunities. In 2008, Troy also ranked as the 4th most affordable U.S. city to live.

The Troy Historical Museum chronicles the different stages of the City of Troy's progression from first inhabitation to the city it has become today. Located at the corners of Livernois Road and Wattles Road, the museum is located behind the old city hall building. Open year round, the museum has ten original structures which customers may enter and observe how they functioned in the past and how they were decorated, as all buildings are full of artifacts from that period. Each structure is original and was meticulously moved from its original location to the museum intact.

In 2003, Troy MI was named Michigan's Sports Town by Sports Illustrated magazine for having the top community sports programs in the state. Troy MI is home to the Troy Sports Center, which is the official training facility of the Detroit Red Wings. The Troy Sports Center is also used for indoor soccer and hockey leagues, and is home to the City of Troy’s high school hockey teams.

Troy is home to the International Academy of Design and Technology, Walsh College; a business oriented school, as well as branches for the University of Phoenix, Central Michigan University, Spring Arbor University, and ITT Technical Institute. Michigan State University also has its Management Education Center located off of I-75 near the intersection of Crooks Rd. and Square Lake Rd.

The City of Troy is well known for its exemplary schools. The Troy School District has six national blue ribbon and 13 State Exemplary Schools. The schools have a 99% graduation rate, with 95% of those students going on to higher education and 2% going on to military service. Both Troy High School and Athens High School were named on the list of The 1000 Most Outstanding High Schools in the United States by Newsweek magazine.

The Troy School District also sends 75 students per year to the International Academy, which is currently ranked 7th in the Newsweek rankings of the best public high schools in the United States. Troy has hosted the International Academy's eastern campus in the old Baker Middle School beginning with the 2008-2009 school year.
